НFOLK NOTIONS ON THE EPIDEMIC AND THEIR REFLECTION IN THE ESSAY “CHOLERA” BY F.M. RESHETNIKOV

Abstract

The article is devoted to a monographic analysis of F. M. Reshetnikov's essay “Cholera” (1866). The essay reflects folk notions on the epidemic. The author reveals how people’s attitude to a dangerous disease changes over time. The relevance of the article is related to the possibility of projecting the events of the distant past onto modern realities associated with the coronovirus epidemic. The genre originality of the essay that is due to the combination of epic and drama features is revealed. The synthesis of generic principles reflects the subtitle of the essay – “modern scenes”. The author’s documentary accuracy is noted, which makes it possible to compare his literary works with old photographs. The typological closeness of Reshetnikov’s work with the work of the Russian writers of the 20th century is stated.
